Mission

Haircare has been exclusive for too long.  Shukrah's mission is to craft solutions for people whose beauty is undervalued. We create tools for you to feel seen and affirmed because beauty was never meant to be an exploration of lack, but rather
a celebration of our very best.

Our Founder & CEO

Miona Short is a poet and astrophysicist from Chicago with roots in Mississippi. She first invented the Carefree Comb in college and spent 7 years prototyping and simplifying until she found a solution that combined elegant design, practical engineering, and manufacturability.

Miona (mi-ah'-nah) first began her entrepreneurial journey because her haircare routine left her exhausted with no time to work or study. At the height of her frustration, she had a vision for a comb that would allow her to combine the most tedious parts of her routine---detangling and conditioning.

After conducting a research survey of women's haircare needs, she felt confident that the Carefree Comb is a needed product and decided to put grad school on hold to pursue this.

When Miona isn't working on her business, she's fermenting vegetables, hanging upside down in an aerial hammock, or reading and writing poetry.

If haircare is constantly on your mind, and it doesn't feel good to think about, then this one is for you. I hope you love the Carefree Comb as much as I do.

Vision

We want to live in a world where beauty has no compromise. No matter how thick, dense, curly, and coily your strands, your haircare should be a joyful, beautiful practice. For everything that is inconvenient & tedious about beauty, we will craft products that inspire & delight.

The Cydney M. Edwards
Lift as You Climb Community Grant

Cydney was kind, brilliant, and loved others with everything she had. She was community-oriented, driven, and an exceedingly rare human being. I saw her as a big sister and always wanted to be like her.

Cydney taught me that it doesn't take much to show up for people. Just give what you have.

Shukrah is a small business. We're not in a position (yet) to contribute 5 and 6-figure grants to other businesses. We will start with $500USD, and the grant will grow as we grow.

I got to know Cydney for 22 years & we became good friends. I miss her every day. This is the best way I know to honor her memory---to serve others and heal myself. More details on this grant soon.
